Many of the reality shows now airing on TVs around the world originated from Holland. Big Brother, Fear Factor, they all came from the land of windmills and tulips. But now the Dutch have launched a new reality television format called "The Golden Cage". It's a new incarnation of Big Brother, only this show excels in pure nastiness. And apparently it's also coming to the US.

What's the show about?

They've locked up 8 contestants in a villa. They can live like millionaires and the last person standing wins the house and a jackpot worth millions. But there's no voting off by viewers. All participants can do is wait for opponents to get home sick or annoy them until they leave.

Psychologists assume that harassment and bullying will be the only ways of getting rid of one's rivals and obtaining the reward. And they're probably right. So far we've had:

cheating
vomiting on other people
throwing food & plates to one another
lots of sex (even with prostitutes)
fist fights
and a lot of yelling, pushing & kicking

So have the Dutch gone crazy?

I don't know but they've certainly taken reality shows to the next unethical step. And this seems to be an unstoppable movement. Politicians have tried to forbid this show, unsuccessfully. Unlike Big Brother, where the producers took responsibility for the mental health of it's competitors, this program's creators reject any such responsibility. I think it's a matter of time before someone gets seriously injured (physically or mentally). Trust me, this is hell, and all it takes is a few greedy people in a house.

A fight with cleaning products because "Terror" Jaap - the big guy - trashed Lieke's bed with garbage. She wants him to clean it up but he's not really receptive to her threats. Or her spit for that matter.

Lieke's clothes are ripped off by angry millionaires who feel she's been acting too much like a princess lately. Huub - her boyfriend - is being held down so that he can't intervene.
